A speaker sitting flat on a desk has two problems. It fires past your ears instead of at them, and it pumps energy into the desktop, which starts resonating along with the music. The Monitor Audio Radius Desk Pad 4G deals with both.
Monitor Audio built it for the Radius 1 4G and Radius 3 4G. Each pad is moulded from rubber compounded to a specific hardness, sized 24 x 114 x 138 mm, about 0.9 by 4.5 by 5.4 inches. They come as a pair, in black, with a subtle upward tilt that aims each speaker at where you sit.
Isolation is not about softness: too soft and the cabinet rocks, smearing the bass; too hard and vibration passes into the desk. Monitor Audio specifies the compound to sit in between, so the speaker stays planted while the desk stops joining in.
The tilt is the other half, because on a desk a small speaker usually sits below ear level, so the tweeter fires at your chest and the top end goes flat. Angling the cabinet up puts the high frequencies back on axis, and Monitor Audio credits it with better soundstage and high-frequency projection in near-field listening.
Nothing to wire. Set a pad where each speaker goes, put the speaker on it, and check it sits evenly without rocking. Then sit down and sight along the tweeter. If it still points below your ears, raise the whole speaker before you blame the pad.
Leave a little slack in the speaker cable, since the cabinet now sits higher and tipped back. Small change, real difference.
Here is what usually surrounds a desktop pair.
Monitor Audio designed it for the Radius 1 4G and Radius 3 4G. Each pad measures 114 by 138 mm, so check your footprint before using it under anything else.
Yes, a pair, which covers both speakers in a desktop stereo setup.
Monitor Audio calls it a subtle upward tilt and does not publish the angle. It aims the tweeter toward a seated listener, and it is not a replacement for a stand.
It is solid rubber, which helps protect the surface underneath. On oiled or delicate wood, lift rather than slide the pads.
Monitor Audio’s channel introduces the whole Radius Series 4G, including the desktop setups these pads are built for.
