AudioQuest's Big Sur is the fourth Bridges & Falls cable and the best of the four that Stereophile recommends together. It is one cable with a single conductor body that splits at each end into the left and right RCA plugs, carrying both channels; it is not sold as a single-RCA cable. It uses solid Perfect-Surface Copper+ in a Brown/Black Braid jacket, and upgrades the plugs to gold-plated pure Purple Copper.
Other length & termination options are available. Call us to discuss your needs.
The wires are solid Perfect-Surface Copper+, which AudioQuest calls PSC+. It is a higher grade of the smooth copper used in Golden Gate. AudioQuest says the skin cuts the distortion that grain boundaries cause. Each wire sits in foamed plastic that is mostly air.
Big Sur ends in a cold-welded plug. Its body is pure Purple Copper, AudioQuest's high-purity copper, under the gold. The cables below it use gold over a base alloy. A press bonds the plug to the wire without solder, which AudioQuest calls a common source of distortion.
Big Sur uses Direction-Controlled Conductors, with each conductor set to run in one direction. The layout gives the ground path a lower impedance than the signal path. AudioQuest says this makes the sound richer.
Big Sur is listed in Stereophile's Recommended Components. The entry notes that Big Sur "upgrades the other models' gold-plated RCA plugs to gold-plated plugs of pure purple copper."
Moving up the four, the listing says, Stephen Mejias heard improvements in image focus, tone color, drama, and overall clarity and extension. Stereophile calls all four cables attractive, well made, and very flexible.
Run Big Sur from a line-level output, a DAC, streamer, CD player or phono stage, to a line-level input on your amplifier or preamp. Keep left to left and right to right. Push each plug straight on until it seats. Pull it off by the barrel, never by the cable.
Then listen.
Measure the route the cable will really take between your components, around shelves and behind the rack. Then add a little slack. As audio legend George Cardas puts it, "A cable that's just long enough usually turns out to be just not long enough."
If your amplifier and speakers sit far from your source, we recommend a long interconnect over a long speaker cable. A really long interconnect affects system performance less than a really long speaker cable.
An interconnect often stays in a system for years, so it is easy to overlook. Look again when something else changes: a new DAC, streamer or phono stage, or a better amplifier.
An interconnect is one link in the chain. It usually joins these categories.
AudioQuest's own RCA plug with a body of pure Purple Copper under the gold. It is cold welded to the wire, not soldered. The cables below Big Sur use gold over a base alloy.
One cable. It has a single conductor body that splits at each end into the left and right RCA plugs, carrying both channels. It is not sold as a single-RCA cable.
Limited lifetime warranty with proof of purchase from an authorized dealer. AudioQuest will repair or replace a defective cable that has not been abused. Keep your proof of purchase.
AudioQuest Sydney is the next rung. It keeps solid Perfect-Surface Copper+ but moves to Polyethylene Air-Tube insulation and direct-silver-plated Pure Purple Copper plugs.
