The Onkyo M-80 is a two-channel Class AB power amplifier from Onkyo's Icon Series. Onkyo rates it at 130 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 200 watts into 4 ohms.
It takes a signal from your preamp over balanced XLR or RCA, and its backlit power meters show the output as you listen. It comes in Black or Silver.
The M-80 uses a three-stage Inverted Darlington amplifier with very low output impedance, so it can deliver large current to your speakers. Onkyo keeps negative feedback low so noise from the speaker does not affect the amplifier.
The output transistors are wired in parallel for strong instantaneous current. The driver stage uses Onkyo's DIDRC circuit, a high-slew-rate design that reduces noise in the ultra-high frequency band.
The housing pairs two aluminum side panels with a steel top panel. Onkyo says this three-piece construction increases rigidity and suppresses vibration.
A custom high-current power supply, 10,000 µF capacitors made for Onkyo and an extruded aluminum heat sink complete the design.
Two backlit power meters show output in watts. A front button switches the range between x1 and x10 or turns the meters off, and the backlight has its own button.
The M-80 needs a separate preamplifier or a source with a variable output. Connect it with one pair of balanced XLR cables or one pair of RCA cables, and choose the input with the rear switch.
Two sets of speaker terminals, A and B, can run two pairs of speakers. Use 4 to 16 ohm speakers on A or B alone, or 8 to 16 ohm speakers when both play at once.
A 12V trigger input lets a compatible preamp switch the M-80 on and off, and a cable is included. Auto standby turns it off after 20 minutes with no signal.
What it will not do: it has no volume control, no source inputs and no DAC or streaming. It is a stereo power amplifier, not an integrated amplifier or receiver.
Jeff Wheaton reviewed the M-80 with Onkyo's P-80 preamplifier for Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity (October 2026). He wrote that the pair "managed the iron-fist control of bass-with-body, soul, finesse, delicacy, and dynamics."
He also wrote: "I am firmly a tube guy, and have been for the past 30 years, but these two, the Onkyo P-80 Network Preamplifier and Onkyo M-80 Power Amplifier, have me questioning my loyalty and have me thinking of how I can get a pair of these to keep!"
The M-80 comes in Black or Silver.
Build your separates system around the M-80:
Yes. The M-80 has no volume control or source inputs. Connect it to a preamp or a source with a variable output.
Yes. It has one pair of balanced XLR inputs and one pair of RCA inputs, chosen with a rear switch.
Yes, using the A and B outputs. When both pairs play at once, use speakers rated 8 to 16 ohms.
Yes, if your preamp has a 12V trigger output. Connect them with the included 12V trigger cable.
Onkyo says 10 to 30 minutes of warm-up stabilizes the internal components and improves the sound.
